Sprawled across the many bluffs of the peninsula Rancho Palos Verdes boasts famous golf courses, a world renowned nature reserve, and an interesting history of an area known as Portuguese Bend. (This was actually an old whaling station and has been subject to many landslides over the years) Take a hike in RPV and you might think you have traveled to a place far, far away! Maybe end up at the Point Vicente Lighthouse? At least the city dwellers will feel at home during their 5-star stay at the Terranea Resort.
Where the peninsula meets the Pacific, and daily life is shaped by what is right outside.
Rancho Palos Verdes sits on one of the most geographically distinctive stretches of land in Southern California. The Palos Verdes Peninsula juts into the Pacific with three-sided ocean exposure, Catalina Island visible on clear days, and a coastline of rugged cliffs, ecological reserves, and some of the longest surf breaks in the South Bay. Terranea Resort, 102 acres of oceanfront luxury, sits here. So does Abalone Cove, one of the best places to spend a slow afternoon anywhere in the South Bay. The city is primarily residential and suburban, with large lots and a pace of life that reflects the natural environment around it rather than any commercial corridor.
Location: Southern tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, bordered by the Pacific on three sides
Character: Scenic, suburban, and expansive. Life here is set by the peninsula's natural landscape, not commercial density
Landmark: Terranea Resort, 102 oceanfront acres and one of the premier destination resorts in Southern California
Natural assets: Abalone Cove Shoreline Park and Ecological Reserve, Point Vicente Lighthouse and Interpretive Center, miles of coastal hiking trail
Views: Catalina Island on clear days, with south-facing blufftop properties delivering unobstructed Pacific panoramas
The coastline, trails, tide pools, and ecological preserves are what define daily life here. Terranea adds a world-class resort experience that works as a community amenity and a destination in its own right.
Terranea Resort: 102 acres on the ocean with a spa, a nine-hole par-3 golf course, multiple pools, coastal hiking access, and dining options ranging from casual to fine. Non-guests can book dining and day-use experiences, so it is not just for hotel guests.
Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles: One of the most dramatic golf settings in Southern California, perched on the bluffs above the Pacific in RPV. The course draws serious golfers from across the region, and the views alone make it worth knowing about even if you do not play.
Point Vicente Interpretive Center: Adjacent to the historic lighthouse, this public facility covers the peninsula's natural and cultural history and is one of the best whale watching spots on the California coast from December through April.
Peninsula Racket Club: World-class tennis and pickleball with fully lit courts and a strong calendar of junior and senior programs. One of the better racket sport facilities in the South Bay.
Gray Whale Season at Point Vicente: Late December through early April, Point Vicente is one of the best free whale watching spots on the Southern California coast. Naturalists are on-site during peak weekends. If you have not done it, you should.
Marilyn Ryan Sunset Point Park: Named after the city's first mayor, this park draws informal gatherings, picnics, and sunset views that rank among the best in the South Bay. Locals bring out-of-town friends here to watch Catalina at sunset.
Abalone Cove Shoreline Park and Ecological Reserve: A California State-designated preserve with tide pools, snorkeling, hiking trails, cliff views, and summer lifeguards. Catalina Island sits on the horizon. No bonfires, but few spots on the peninsula reward a slow afternoon more than this one.
Lunada Bay Surf Break: A well-known long break on the peninsula's southwestern shore with consistent swell and a dedicated local surf culture. One of the better waves in the South Bay for experienced surfers.
Terranea Boutique Shops: Coastal lifestyle goods, wellness products, and locally sourced items in a setting where browsing feels like part of the visit.
Peninsula Center: The main retail hub for RPV residents, covering grocery, specialty retail, and service businesses without requiring a drive off the hill.
Dining here is anchored by Terranea's venues and a small cluster of well-regarded local spots on the peninsula's commercial corridors. The setting more than compensates for the limited density.
Terranea Dining: Nelson's is an oceanfront bar and grill with Pacific views; mar'sel is a fine dining room serving California coastal cuisine. Both are worth the drive on their own terms.
The Original Red Onion: A peninsula institution open since 1963 on Silver Spur Road in Rolling Hills Estates, serving Sonora-style Mexican food from family recipes passed through generations. Three generations of loyal customers, and earned every one of them.
Yellow Vase: A cafe, bakery, and floral boutique along Palos Verdes Drive West with a devoted South Bay following for pastries, brunch, and coffee.
Swan Thai: A well-regarded Thai restaurant with a consistent menu the peninsula community has trusted for years.
Inka Wasi Peruvian Cuisine: A locally favored Peruvian spot that draws regulars from across the Palos Verdes area.
Nelson's at Terranea: An oceanfront bar with some of the best coastal views of any bar in Southern California. The setting justifies the drive on its own.
The Grill at Terranea: A poolside bar with craft cocktails and an easy outdoor energy that fits a South Bay afternoon well.
RPV offers a version of coastal Los Angeles living that is genuinely different from anything in the flat beach cities to the north. Large lots, preserved open space, ocean and island views, and a pace built around the natural environment rather than commercial activity. The trail network, ecological preserves, and proximity to Terranea give residents access to things most South Bay communities simply cannot offer.
Terranea Resort is the clearest landmark. Locally, Abalone Cove and the broader trail and preserve network are what define daily life for residents. The Point Vicente Lighthouse, whale watching season, and the peninsula's surf breaks round out an identity built on natural geography rather than anything man-made.
One of the more exclusive markets in the South Bay, with prices that reflect the scarcity of supply and the quality of the views. Almost entirely single-family, with lot sizes that are generous relative to coastal Los Angeles. Properties with direct bluff or ocean views carry real premiums. The market draws buyers who want privacy, natural surroundings, and a quieter version of South Bay living, and who are willing to pay for it.
